THE ABBEY OF MONTECASSINO
Basilica Cathedral

The Right Aisle

On the right aisle, beginning from the entrance, there are four chapels:

  • the first Chapel is dedicated to St. Gregory the Great, portrayed by F. Del Vecchio on the central canvas;
  • the second Chapel, dedicated to St. Joseph, has three panels painted by D. Ricci and two beautiful polychrome inlays representing Hope and Faith;
  • the third Chapel, entitled to the Blessed Sacrament has an altar in precious marble and a gilded bronze Tabernacle by N. Salvi, 1728. The Center panel features The Last Communion of St. Benedict by S. Conca (18th century), flanked by pictures painted by N. Melanconico (18th century), featuring The Last Supper and St. Peter's Proclamation of Christ as the Messiah.
  • the fourth Chapel is dedicated to Abbot Bertharius, martyrized by the Saracens in 883; the central canvas by F. De Mura portrays him in Heaven with an aureole.
At the end we find the beautiful black marble portal that brings to monastic community premises: peculiar are its spiral columns in Sicilian breccia stone, topped by a high relief of the Madonna between angels by A. Campi (18th century).
