THE ABBEY OF MONTECASSINO
Basilica Cathedral

The Left Aisle

On the left aisle, beginning from the entrance, we find four chapels:

  • the first Chapel is dedicated to the Archangels; the central painting is by the 18th century Neapolitan School and the side panels show St. Gabriel announcing the birth of St. John to Zacharias, and St. Raphael while helping Tobias to heal his blind father, by G. Dinacci (1990).
  • the second Chapel bears the name of St. John the Baptist: the frescoes are by B. Long (1975), featuring Christ being baptized, St. John in the desert and his decollation. Previous frescoes were by Solimena and Conca; the related sketches are exposed in the Museum;
  • the third Chapel is dedicated to Sts. Peter and Paul, painted in 1979 by S. Pistolesi, showing St. Peter being freed from jail by an angel, and St. Paul while writing his epistles to the Christians to whom he spread the Gospel;
  • the fourth Chapel, near the Vestry is dedicated to St. Vittore III, the former Abbot Desiderius. The altar-piece is by P. Annigoni (1972) and portrays Desiderius as he receives from St. Benedict the Rule and the Pastoral Letter for government of Montecassino.
Proceeding you can admire the rich Sacristy (Vestry) portal with a medallion by A. Campi (17th century) featuring Christ rising his hand in blessing.
